Community Notice: Clearwater Farmer’s Market and COVID-19

On March 26th, 2020 the Ministry of Health designated farmers’ markets as essential food FM entrance 2020.jpgand agriculture service providers. Farmers' markets are exempt from the mass gathering order: however, they are prohibited from selling non-food products and must comply with physical distancing requirements. The current public health crisis has highlighted the importance of local food systems and the Clearwater Farmer’s Market is a crucial part of our local food supply. Many farmer’s markets in the province are in danger of collapsing due to lost revenue from the arts and crafts vendors and COVID-19 restrictions.

In order to ensure the ongoing success of our local market, Yellowhead Community Services (YCS) and the Clearwater Farmer’s Market Board of Directors agreed that YCS would assume responsibility of market operations. We would like to take this opportunity to extend our gratitude to all previous board members and volunteers of the Clearwater Farmers Market for their dedication, vision and hard work in providing this valuable service in our community. Several past board members will stay involved in an advisory capacity.

After consultation with vendors and stakeholders, and in consideration of our COVID-19 management strategy, there will be some changes to this year’s market effective May 2, 2020 and are as follows:

  • The market will be relocated to the field at the Dutch Lake Community Centre, 209 Dutch Lake Rd. Market entrance will be on the northeast corner of the field (behind the backstop) There will be public restrooms available in the main building as well as a port-a-potty and handwashing station on the field. Market days and times will stay the same: Saturdays 9:00 am – 12:00 pm,
  • Vendor fees have been reduced to a one time admin fee of $10 for the entire 2020 summer market season to assist new vendors enter the market and all vendors with additional costs they may incur to be consistent with COVID-19 guidelines,
  • Entry to the market will be regulated and physical distancing of 2 metres will be enforced,
  • Market customers will be required to sanitize their hands prior to entering the market,
  • Market customers are asked to “Shop, don’t Stop” and to shop alone if possible,
  • Some vendors will have pre-order and cashless payment options,
  • There will only be the sale of food and edible plants at the market,
  • Vendors are asked to pre-package their product and display it out of reach of customers,
  • An online market for food AND NON-FOOD products may be offered in the coming weeks, dependant on vendor interest.

Our hope is that as restrictions are relaxed and we are able to allow the market to return to more regular operations, that our artisans and crafters can return and that the market will once more become a vibrant social hub with opportunities for live music, children’s activities and community celebrations.

An invitation has been extended to the Clearwater Elks to relocate their breakfast to the new location when restrictions affecting eating establishments are lifted, as we feel that this is an important and valued co-event in the community, however this has not been confirmed as this time. It is also expected that the Nutrition Coupon Program will be offered in our community again.

While our market will look and feel a bit different, we warmly invite our community to come to the market and support our local growers of food. Open-air markets with appropriate safety precautions are a safe, healthy and pleasant way to shop for freshest produce, meat, eggs, baked goods, herbs and edible plants grown close to home.
