Public statement regarding discovery at Kamloops residenial school-May 31, 2021

Every child matters logo.pngTo our neighbours and fellow community members,

It is with deep sadness and regret that Yellowhead Community Services acknowledges the discovery of 215 children at the former Kamloops residential school, announced on May 27, 2021.

We wish to express our deepest sympathy to the first people of the Secwepemc and St'át'imc Nations and all Nations across Canada. We cannot imagine the pain and suffering experienced by so many Indigenous children and their families during this dark and dreadful time in history.

To all the families who never had a child return home, all the survivors of the residential school system and all the communities impacted by this tragedy, we hold you in our thoughts and extend our sincere apologies.

On behalf of Yellowhead Community Services Society

Chief Operating Officers Susanne Butcher and Nikki Vincent
