Job Skills

The Job Skills Component of our services was designed to assist adults with developmental disabilities find meaningful, paid employment.  A Job Skills Coach works with each individual to assess his or her interests, experiences, skills and prepare for employment in various ways such as:

  • Time management and resolving transportation issues
  • Developing pre-employment skills such as resume writting, mock interviews
  • Assistance to take job related training or courses such as Food Save and First Aid
  • Assistance accessing services through Clearwater Employment Services (Work BC)
  • Enhancing personal skills (appropriate dress, hygiene, work-place conduct)
  • On the job training, supervison and conflict resloution

bus shelter clean 1.jpgThe Job Skills Coach may accompany and assist the individual at the work site if necessary, until the individual and the employer are satisfied that training is complete and the employee has achieved a level of skill, and confidence necessary to continue on their own. The Job Skills Coach can re-engage at any time to assist with further training and conflict resolution should issues develop.

In some circumstances, YCS becomes the employer through contracts and agreements held with the Province, other agencies as well as internal opportunities that would otherwise be contracted out in the community.   YCS hires supported individuals as employees to complete the work under the supervision of the job skills coach.   

Areas of successful paid employment include:

  • Forestry Recreation Site Maintenance
  • Window Washing - one entrepreneur started his own window washing business
  • Bus Shelter Maintenance and snow removal at all stops throughout the community.
  • Illegal Dumpsite Cleanup for TNRD
  • Bus Cleaning Contract - weekly cleaning and washing of the interior/exterior of vehicles for Clearwater & Area Transit
  • Riverview Cemetery Grounds Maintenance
  • Lawn and garden care and odd jobs here at YCS and for local residents in the community
  • Concession for Music Nights at DLCC during July and August
  • Bottle recycling at Eco-deopot
